Why should you hire me as a tutor?
1) Experience: In my 20 years of teaching high school math and foreign language, I have learned why students "don't get" certain topics. I have been tutoring full time since the summer of 2014 with a satisfaction rate near 100%. Please see my reviews.
2) Expertise: Teaching at all levels has allowed me to see the big picture sequence of mathematical learning more clearly, so I know what you need to master to be successful in higher level courses. I am an expert teacher at all levels through Calculus, which I taught for 7 years with excellent AP exam results.*
3) Convenience: Get the help you need from the comfort of your home. I use a conferencing app called Zoom (click here for instructions), so all you need is a computer (or Chromebook or tablet) with a microphone, which is usually built in these days, unless it is a desktop computer, and internet access. Sessions can be for any amount of time, and I can often provide service on short notice for those times when problems arise unexpectedly.
4) No risk: I am so confident that you will be pleased with my service that if you are not satisfied with your first session, I won't charge you!

My fee is $60 for the first hour ($1/min) each week and $54/hr (90¢/min) for additional time during the week, and you only pay for the amount of service provided. Also, unlike popular tutoring sites, I require no subscription. Just pay as you go. (Typically I send invoices on a weekly basis.) I accept payment via PayPal, Venmo, Google Wallet, or Zelle (formally ClearXchange). As I mentioned above, I can even meet on short notice for just a few minutes to answer a quick question if I am available. To view my complete list of policies, click here.

Why is it socially acceptable to have "never been good at math"? You don't hear anyone going around saying "I was never a good reader"! I am convinced that so many people cringe at the thought of math because they have never truly understood it. Often, this lack of understanding is not the fault of the student, but of the teacher. Sadly, some teachers don't really understand it themselves, so they simply implement the "memorize-and-regurgitate-on-the-test" teaching method. Memorization doesn't lead to appreciation; it leads to frustration. My specialty is helping students UNDERSTAND mathematics. UNDERSTANDING math is the key to long-term success in the subject. It is the foundation of critical thinking and problem solving. Years ago, I came up with the following "motto of mathematical learning": If you don't know why, why know?
Whether in the role of a teacher or a tutor, I think of myself more as a "thinking coach" than one who imparts knowledge. The cold, hard truth is that most students won't use most of math they learn in high school in their adult lives. Many would argue that makes it a waste of time for these students to take math in high school, but I disagree: math is an excellent platform for developing critical thinking skills. My desire for all students is that they become independent, critical thinkers and problem solvers, not only in math, but in all areas of life.
