Daniel's Cavity
My essential oil journey began with a cavity and a well-known nutrition blog. My adorable little son got two cavities, one on each of his two front teeth, when he was barely four years old. I have this very real concern about dentistry and very young children, so I was not about to have him put under anesthesia and drilled. I decided to do a little research, watch, and wait. I told him if it ever started to hurt him we would go to a dentist. I researched Xylitol, remineralizing toothpastes, and coconut oil pulling, but nothing sounded plausible for a little boy. I couldn’t find a holistic dentist near me, so I just kept watching and waiting. Finally, through a testimony on a well-known nutrition blog, I heard about essential oils and their ability to reverse cavities. I knew someone who had just started selling the brand this blogger was recommending, so I contacted her about oils. She recommended one that is also commonly used to flavor foods, and then said, “But he can’t swallow it, so you’ll have to be careful.”
I paused. It’s a common flavoring, and it’s a natural oil from an edible plant, so why couldn’t he swallow it? So then I reached out to someone else, someone who had mentioned Young Living oils in a conversation but did not sell them. She explained to me that there are differences in oil quality and that I should investigate the origins of certain oil companies. She said I could look at third-party research and find that the brand I had been considering might have added synthetic compounds to the oil I was planning to use on my son.
It was through that research that I felt led to choose Young Living for my essential oils. I signed up with a basic wholesale membership to get the lower price, and I bought one 15 ml bottle of Thieves oil. My sponsor pointed out that the basic wholesale membership is comparable to a wholesale club membership.
Husband tip: if yours is like mine, and pretty much never wants to spend money on anything, and has questions and says “you’ve got to be kidding me” about everything over $19.99 that shows up in your expense list, just record it as whatever expense the oil was replacing. So, whatever it was I initially spent for the wholesale membership plus the Thieves, I simply recorded in our expense log as “dentistry.” Everyone knows going to the dentist is expensive, so when he looked in the spending log, he probably thought I found a really cheap dentist!
Back to the cavity - Thieves is a quite spicy and Daniel absolutely hated it. He was five at this point, but he tends to be a bit on the dramatic side. He got used to the taste for a while, but then he started being really dramatic about it again. I think we were able to consistently use Thieves on his teeth every day after brushing for about 8 months. But this adorable boy had recently lost his place as baby in the family and was relishing the attention from the groaning and spitting. After one particularly dramatic bout, I gave up.
“Hey, you know what, buddy? They’re baby teeth. They’re going to fall out, anyway.”
Yes, I was disappointed. I could see that they were partially healed. The hole in the front had filled in with grayish enamel. (Yes, I poked at it, and no, it wasn’t mashed food or anything gross like that.) The hole on the side had lost its brownish tinge around the edge. So, the final verdict was they were healing when I finally gave up.
I kind of wish we had stuck it out and seen complete healing, but I had a baby that year, and we had a lot going on that year with a job loss and everything. I think the 8 months we stuck it out were pretty good. Plus, we at least kept the cavities from getting any worse. I fully believe complete healing would have been possible on an older, less dramatic child or an adult. I’m happy to report that when the baby teeth finally came out the permanent teeth came in healthy and clear.
Since then, I’ve been able to share this information with two different people who were suffering with a tooth abscess. They used Thieves in coconut oil and were able to heal their mouth without having a root canal, which is always something to avoid!
